From nature’s wild child to feminine artist
Over her lifetime, Coral’s relationship with the wild deepened, and she answered its siren call by capturing the beauty and intrigue she found. Distilling the essence of her ever-growing spiritual relationship. Making artworks that are simultaneously soft, dynamic and mysterious, while being lusciously vivid, potent and evocative. They emerged from her subconsciousness shrouded in mystery and intrigue in an explosion of colour and fertility.
Coral spent her early years in the mountain country of eastern Victoria. She was nature’s wild child, growing up wandering and exploring the wilderness. These adventures, and the stories of the animals and birds her father told her, inspired a deep love, empathy, and connection with the natural world.
This body of work forms the heart of Coral’s identity. As a woman, and as a modern, feminine artist, she’s uncovered a spiritual affinity with the wild, and the sacred feminine.
Finding her place in the wild beauty of the natural world
Working with her mind still and her soul engaged has allowed Coral to understand her work on a deep level. To notice as curves and symbols began to emerge from her subconscious, repeating through her work. Beginning her on a journey of self-discovery.
Each mark she makes is a discovery of a universal thread, which has its beginnings in the stilled mind and creates an untamable energy to pursue images found in nature. Found disguised in the bends of rivers, spiralling vortexes fiery stars in midnight waters, the soft folds of curving petals. And the voluptuous hills, sensuous curves of apples and pears, and the seductive lines leading deep into the heart of an unfurling rose.
It is a heartbeat of fierce femininity. A calling of the cyclic nature of fertility, rebirth and balance. A dance with the Divine Feminine.
Inspired by women who came before her
Like O’Keeffe, Coral paints out her subjects by exploring it across an entire series. In this case by painting new abstractions of the rose. Cropping and enlarging them, honing the image into its most basic and powerful form. Refining the seductive vortex that draws you into an explosion of beauty and colour.
While the balance between the Sacred Feminine and Sacred Masculine have been inspired by both Judy Chicago and Hildegard of Bingen. From the heart of the rose, emerges symbolic references to a perfect completed circle. Representing both the feminine and masculine in harmony and balance.
You see this in Chicago’s own work with mirroring and symmetry, as well as Hildegard of Bingen’s embodiment of both passionate, feminine sensuality and stern, masculine determination. Influences that have subconsciously shaped Coral’s artistic path.
